Abstinence Virtuosity
is really just an extension of 'Sex-negativity' that has been much talked about. And probably exists in endemic proportion in India (so much that sexual problems don't get treated and we can't even use the word SEX..). Of course, if it is the cultural norm, it is possible that it can be possible that I/a few others who agree with me, am/are 'Sex freaks' who're rationalizing their over-working limbic brains. But well, from a Normative view being that of Health and higher quality of life (since sex contributes much to our quality of life), I think we might just not be triple breasted whores from eroticon 6 with erogenous zones extending miles outside our bodies (thank you, Mr Adams).
So the point is that, for some abstinence has some power to improve self esteem. Mostly by the loss of negativity associated with sex.
Some disclaimers: Of course, it is for some people. And of course, it may not apply if the meaning that one attaches to sex is remarkably at variance with that of the general folk. And of course, there can be a hundred reasons (and some of them quite reasonable, healthy and just too personal) for abstinence. But it might be worth our while if we really wondered if Sex-negativity contributes to it. And getting it cleaned out in our heads.. So that we needn't rationalize too much and allow ourselves to just Have Sex. Safely of course..
Osho.

Surface tension..
We were in the Barista on St Marks (amen to it.. die die Hard Rock) while we had a heated debate on how personal we can get when we write about stuff on our blogs. And that was the beginning of exploring the oriental-occidental differences in placing our personal lives, thoughts and identities in a public sphere.. Basically, how we don't mind it.. Some of us. Maybe it is an Indian thing, maybe not..
Well some people write about personal details of friends, dates and acquaintances; some use indirect references to friends to relate concepts and ideas to people (vide supra); some about their emotional and cognitive states (which a lot of people just cannot) and some just about abstract concepts/events/photos/objects. Of course, our boundaries differ. my own personal philosophy is to not encroach on another's personal space/identity while my own limits can be flexible..
And of course there can be problems with boundary thresholds for different people.. And such differences could stem from how much The Public and hence The Appearances are important to people. And maybe a reflection of their self-perception through the public eye. I guess the only real limit should be another person's identity and so long as there is respect for that space, the world should be going good..
